Social Studies in the Elementary Classroom was an
interesting class. The first day we did a clothes tag activity that was very enlightening. We looked
at each other’s clothes tags to find where they were produced then placed a post-it on a world map. Making a connection
to products we use in our daily lives was engaging and interesting. Often time students do not realize how far our products
come from and creating a connection of self to world is important. We also researched the United States Regions
and brought food specifically from that region and gave a presentation. Exploring the world around us locally,
regionally, and globally gives us a new perspective on how we fit in the world.
We also looked into Robert Marazano's theory of teaching which I
found very interesting and helpful. I have since continued to research his ideas and theories. I am most captivated by his
notion of making personal connections with learning. I believe this is very true and must be accomplished for students
to retain a year’s worth of learning. Having the emotional connection helps the student invest themselves
in the experience thus learning comes naturally.
